Mrs. Dorothy P. "Dottie" (Poole) Athens, 77, of 55 Hale Rd., Hubbardston, died Saturday, April 30th in St. Vincent's Hospital, Worcester, surrounded by her family, following a short illness.
Born in Winthrop on April 30th, 1934, she was the daughter of Claarence A. and Alice (Peasley) Poole.
Dottie was a 1951 graduate of Winthrop High School. She was an environmental activist and a strong promoter of 'Earth Day", was a founder of the Hubbardston Recycling Committee, was a founder of the "Open Space Committee"and the "Dottie Rock Trail of Hubbardston" was named after her. Together with her husband she hitchhiked throughout New Zealand. She was also an avid traveler. She was a dedicated, giving woman to everyone, loved everyone and was loved by many. Dottie was a collector of family and friends photographs.
Dottie enjoyed music, dancing, working with computers, reading, writing stories and poetry, art, painting, sewing, crafts, cooking, and exercising with "Silver Sneakers".
She leaves her husband of 54 years, Ernest B. Athens of Hubbardston; a son, Victor Mendez of Hubbardston; 3 daughters, Janet M. Athens and her significant other Daniel I. Kasnitz of Brattleboro, VT, Natasha M. Delima of Framingham, Nancy E. Tonelli and her husband Antonio of Winchendon; 2 grandchildren, Timothy Tonelli of Winchendon and Hannah Kasnitz of Brattleboro, VT; 1 niece, 3 nephews and several cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Beverly Reardon.
A graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 4th at 11 am in Royal Glenn Cemetery, Hubbardston. Calling hours at the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner are Tuesday, May 3rd from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
