Doris (Burns) Charland, 89, of 32 Hospital Road, Gardner, formerly of 94 Minott Street, Gardner, died peacefully Saturday, December 14, 2013 in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner with her husband by her side, following a period of declining health.
Born in Gardner on October 17, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Margaret (Shay) (Sinclair) Burns.
Doris graduated from Gardner High School, Gardner with the Class of 1942.
She was a member of Holy Spirit Church of Gardner.
Doris spent many years as a volunteer at Heywood Hospital and the former LaChance Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, both of Gardner. She loved animals, both domestic and wildlife. Doris was quite generous throughout her life, giving of herself and also donating monetarily to numerous children's, Catholic and animal charities.
She leaves her husband, Marshall Charland of Gardner; one sister-in-law, Lorraine Quinn of Burlington, NC; several nieces and nephews in Gardner and North Carolina. She was predeceased by her brother, Ernest Sinclair and by her sister, Mary M. Kelley.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, December 30th at 2:00 p.m. in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Road, Winchendon.
A calling hour will be held Monday, December 30th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Gardner Animal Control Facility, c/o City Hall, 95 Pleasant Street, Gardner, MA 01440.
