Donald "Gumpy" E. Richard, 77, of 160 Summer Street, Gardner, died Tuesday, March 11th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, surrounded by his family.
Born in Fitchburg on September 2, 1930, he was the son of the late Edgar and Tynne Richard.
Donald was a 1948 graduate of Leominster High School, Leominster.
He was a carpenter, employed by W. J. Meehan Company of Gardner for several years, retiring in 1983.
Donald was a member of Mission Street Congregational Church, Gardner.
Mr. Richard served in both the United States Army and the United States Navy.
Donald enjoyed traveling, football and watching Western television shows, especially those with John Wayne.
Mr. Richard was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Helen S. (Coller) Richard, who died April 24, 1996.
He leaves two sons, Dana D. Richard and his fiancé Valarie White of Templeton and Randy L. Richard and his wife Linda of Gardner; one daughter, Karen H. Andrews of Gardner; seven grandchildren, Brandy Hamel, Angela Dechamps, Toby Andrews, Shawn Andrews, Timothy Richard, Bonnie Stephen and Jennifer Richard; five great-grandchildren, Brian, Patrick and Isabelle Hamel, Brandon Darby and Gavin Poise; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Gary Richard and Gerry Richard.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 15th at 2:00 p.m. in Mission Street Congregational Church, Mission Street, Gardner. Pastor Dana Witty will officiate.
