Donald R. "Gramps" Cormier, 83, of Gardner, passed away peacefully Friday, July 24, 2015 at UMASS Memorial Medical Center, University Campus of Worcester, following an illness.
Born in Gardner on April 5, 1932, he was the son of the late Donat and Delia (Cormier) Cormier.
A graduate of Gardner High School of Gardner, he was a United States Korean War Army Veteran and received the National Defense Service Medal.
He spent many years as a hairdresser and was the owner/operator of Don's Beauty Shoppe of Gardner, prior to retiring in 1977. He was also employed by the United States Post Office of Gardner.
Donald was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish of Gardner as well as a member of the Salmon Club and the Otter River Sportsman's Club of Templeton.
He was an avid hunter who also enjoyed deep sea fishing, playing tennis, and most especially - playing cribbage. He also loved the beach and vacationing in Florida where he would spend hours walking the beach collecting sea glass.
Don, Dad, Gramps, T was an amazing family man and a friend to so many. He always had a smile and a moment to spare for all whom he encountered. He humbly and quietly went about the business of life, yet he touched so many through his life's work and his love of family. He will be dearly missed by all those that love him.
Donald was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Doris Y. (Berthiaume) Cormier, who passed away on June 5, 1994.
He leaves two daughters, Shelly A. Martel and her husband Charles, Jr. of Pittsburgh, PA and Kelly M. Goodrich of Gardner; one brother, Armand Cormier and his wife Anita of Henderson, NV; two grandchildren, Jamie and Breanne White; two great grandchildren, Kiley and John R. Goodrich; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandson, John R. Goodrich; his brother, Roger Cormier; and sister, Lorraine Arsenault.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 1st from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 12:00 p.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery of Gardner at a later date.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, August 1st from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home.
