Donald J. "Dugan" Casavant, 80, of 220 Ash Street, Gardner died peacefully Wednesday, October 24, 2012 in Heywood Hospital, Gardner following a long illness.
Born in Gardner on November 20, 1931, he was the son of the late Edward and Leona (Fournier) Casavant.
He was employed by the United States Postal Service as a Superintendent of Postal Operations in Gardner for 32 years, retiring in 1990.
Donald graduated from Gardner High School with the Class of 1949, and later attended Becker Jr. College in Worcester.
He was a United States Korean War Army Veteran and received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Gardner. Donald was also a Life Member and past Commander (1960-1961) of the VFW Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner, a member of the American Legion Eugene M. Connors Post 193 of Winchendon, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 70 of Fitchburg, Gardner Fish and Gun Club and served as Chairperson of the Gardner Housing Authority for over 40 years.
Donald enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and traveling. His home was his pride and joy, and he kept his yard impeccably maintained. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
He leaves his wife of 52 years, Veronica E. (Venn) Casavant of Gardner; one grandson, Jason A. Arcangeli and his wife Nicole of Westminster; three great-grandchildren, Julian, Alex and Matthew Arcangeli; one sister-in-law, Doris Casavant of Gardner; one niece, Diane M. Casavant of Boston; one nephew, Dennis R. Casavant and his wife Diane of Pelham, NH; and several cousins. He was predeceased by his infant son, Michael D. Casavant who died in 1961; one daughter, Kathleen J. Alvanos who died in 2004; and by one brother, Robert E. Casavant who died in 2003.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 29th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 GlenAllen Street, Winchendon.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be Sunday, October 28th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
