Donald J. "D.A." Ares, 84, of Applewood Home for Elders, 171 South Royalston Rd., Athol, died Wednesday, October 26th in the Leo P. LaChance Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing, Gardner, following a short illness.
Born in Magog, Quebec, Canada on November 23, 1920, he was the son of Joseph and Eva (Ducharme) Ares.
He was a woodworker and assembler employed by the Nichols & Stone Co. of Gardner for 32 years, retiring in 1983.
Donald was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. He was a member of the Acadien Social Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 747 of Gardner, Trout Club, Deep Sea Club and enjoyed fishing and reading. He was a New York Yankees fan and was formerly an amateur boxer.
He leaves a son, Paul L. Ares and wife Doreen of Fitchburg; 1 daughter, Donna M. Ares of Sutton; 1 sister, Lena Brunelle of Providence, RI; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves his former wife, Eva (Lison) Ares of Gardner. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Adelard and Paul E. Ares and 4 sisters, Lucille Borey, Doris Gore, Adrienne Dennihan and Blanche Ray.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 31st from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
A calling hour at the funeral home will be Monday, October 31st from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
