Denise Alexandra "Alex" (Lapierre) Hamel, 102 ½, of 51 Hospital Hill Road, Baldwinville, formerly of 104 Ash Street, Gardner, died Friday, December 29th in Baldwinville Nursing Home.
Born in Concord, N.H. on June 22, 1904, she was the daughter of Alphonse and Louise (Racine) Lapierre.
Mrs. Hamel was a telephone operator employed by New England Telephone in Gardner for 27 years, retiring in 1960.
She graduated from Concord High School in 1922.
Mrs. Hamel was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She enjoyed reading poetry, doing crossword puzzles, and singing French songs to her grandchildren. She was also an avid swimmer. At the age of 75, she climbed to the top of Mt. Monadnock.
Her husband of 60 years, Robert A. Hamel died in 1995.
She leaves one son, Robert R. Hamel of Winchendon; one daughter, Louise E. Bourgeois and her husband Gerald J. of Gardner; three grandchildren, Linda Carcieri and Joseph Bourgeois both of Gardner and Karen Dempsey of Winchendon; six great-grandchildren, David Bourgeois of Gardner, Matthew, Kristen and Jessica Carcieri of Athol, Korrie and Warren Dempsey of Winchendon, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister Anna Lapierre.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 4th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc. 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 am in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
A calling hour at the funeral home will be Thursday, January 4th from 8:30 am to 9:30 am.
Memorial contributions may be made to either Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church or Our Lady of the Holy Rosary School, both at 135 Nichols Street, Gardner, MA 01440.
