Charles B. "Charlie" Koczan, 89, of 284 W. Broadway, Gardner died peacefully, Wednesday, April 14th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner following a brief illness.
Born in Gardner on May 20, 1920, he was the son of the late Alexander and Rozalia (Mozdzer) Koczan.
Charlie was a steam fitter for Union Local #4 of Worcester, employed by Royal Steam Heater Company of Gardner for several years, retiring in 1985.
Charlie was a United States W.W. II Army Veteran, and received the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Gardner. He was also a member of the Polish American Citizens Club of Gardner, Otter River Sportsman Club, V.F.W. Ovila Case, Post 905 of Gardner, Polish American Veterans of Gardner and Lowell, and was Past Commander of the Gardner Polish American Veterans. He was a charter member of the Polish American Veterans Bowling League and a member of the Golden Agers Bowling League.
Charlie enjoyed playing golf, softball and dancing. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He walked in many parades, and on several occasions carried the U.S. flag for the Polish American Veterans. Charlie also well known for his homemade kielbasa, which he frequently made for his friends.
He leaves his wife of 45 years, Thelma J. (Gronlund) Koczan of Gardner; one brother, Stanley T. Koczan and his wife Nellie of Gardner; one sister, Mary Sawicki of Otter River; one sister-in-law, Marcella Koczan of Athol; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Frank W. Koczan and by two sisters, Jennie Dymek and Loretta Koczan.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner. Pastor David Cote will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Gardner.
A calling hour in the funeral home will be Tuesday, April 20th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
