Arthur L. Bernier, 90, of 47 Lake Street, Gardner, died peacefully following a short illness Wednesday, August 22nd in the Golden Living Center, Fitchburg.
He was born in Woonsocket, RI on January 11, 1917, the son of the late Joseph and Cordelie (Joyal) Bernier.
Mr. Bernier owned and managed the Blue Moon Diner several years ago. It was he who was responsible for bringing the diner from Winchendon to Gardner. Arthur was also involved in many other business ventures throughout his life.
Mr. Bernier was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, Post #5613 of Jaffrey, NH, a member of the American Legion Eugene M. Connor Post #193 of Winchendon, MA, and the Gardner Lodge of Elks Post #1426.
Arthur especially enjoyed woodworking.
Mr. Bernier was a W.W. II U.S. Army Veteran, and received the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army of Occupation Medal & Germany Clasp, Combat Infantryman Badge First Award, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, Sharpshooter Badge and Rifle Bar, Marksman Badge and Machine Gun Bar, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Bronze Star Attachment, WWII Victory Medal, and Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII.
He was predeceased by his wife Gertrude Clariste (Bernier) Bernier.
He leaves one sister, Aurore C. Desrosiers of Woonsocket, RI; one niece, Frances Day; and three nephews, Lionel Boucher and his wife Lorraine, Joseph Boucher and his wife Jeanne, and Roland Boucher.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 27th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 11:00 am in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
A calling hour at the funeral home will be Monday, August 27th from 9:30 am to 10:30 am in the funeral home.
