Andrea B. (Persechino) Schafron, 48, of 23 Elizabeth St, Gardner, died Sunday, June 15, 2014 in UMass Memorial Medical Center University Campus, after a heroic 2 1/2 year battle with leukemia.
Born in Providence, RI on October 19, 1965, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Dante Persechino and Wilma (Bray) Persechino. She was educated in Cranston, RI Public Schools, and was a 1985 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in Culinary Arts. Prior to her illness she was employed as a cook with Chartwells, working at schools in the Gardner Public School District. She also operated a boutique bakery, Sweet Street Baking, from her home in Gardner.
Andrea was renowned for her skill as a baker and as a needlepoint fine artist, for her professionally-honed gourmet cooking skills, for her annual winter house party where she filled her home with laughter, sumptuous food, and rich cakes and desserts for all, and for her loving devotion to her adored daughter Emily and husband Mark. If there was an event happening-any event-you could count on Andrea to appear with a cake designed to feed at least twice the number of guests. Everybody who met Andrea liked her immediately for her positive, sunny attitude, and for her infectious smile and offbeat sense of humor that never quit, even when in the fight of her life against leukemia. She fought long, hard, and courageously to the bitter end, with focus, dignity, and a loveliness of spirit that will inspire those she left behind for the rest of their days. Our Andrea. Our immortal beloved.
Andrea is survived by her husband, Mark M. Schafron and her daughter, Emily A. Schafron both of Gardner; her mother, Wilma Persechino of Cranston, RI; her brother, Dante Persechino and his wife Laurie and their son Dante all of Cranston; a sister, Maria Persechino; a stepson, Ian Schafron of Rehoboth, MA; and cousins Michael and Claudia Cipolla of Warwick, RI, along with other cousins.
