Alfred J. "Al", "Teboy" Richard, 85, of 47 Lake Street, Gardner, died Thursday, September 4th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner surrounded by his loving family following a very long illness.
Born in Gardner on July 19, 1923, he was the son of the late Alban Richard and Maime (Duplacy) (Richard) Johnson.
Al was a Travel Agent and a Real Estate Broker. He owned Gardner Travel Agency, Inc. and A. J. Richard Realty both in Gardner. He formerly owned A.J. Richard Insurance Co. of Gardner.
Al attended Gardner High School, Gardner and received his GED through the Veterans Administration in 2003.
Al was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner. He was a member and past president of ASTA, American Society of Travel Agents. Al was a member of the Massachusetts Board of Realtors, former Director of Colonial Co-Operative Bank in Gardner, a former member and past president of Gardner Rotary Club, a member of the Gardner Lodge of Elks #1426, VFW Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner, a member of the Gardner Golf Course and he served on the board for the Greater Gardner Chamber of Commerce.
Al was a United States WWII Navy Veteran, and received the World War II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Area Ribbon, the European-African Middle East Ribbon, and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with 2 stars. During his time in the military he was he was on the Naval Boxing Team.
Al loved to travel, play golf and ski. He was a sports enthusiast, who will be remembered for playing baseball at Gardner High School, his outstanding ability as a catcher for several local softball teams, and leading many victories in local games and tournaments throughout New England while playing "right wing" for the Gardner Hockey Club from 1947 thru 1952, and also for playing 'right wing" for Boston's Northeast Airlines Hockey Club in 1960 and also the Pan-Am Semi-Professional Hockey Team. Al was a huge fan of all New England sports teams.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Gloria R. (Landry) Richard of Gardner; one son, Thomas J. Richard and his wife Maureen of Gardner; two daughters, Janice E. Conboy and her husband Darren of Lexington and Carol A. Cormier and her husband Ivan of Gardner; one brother, Donald Richard and his wife Rita of Florida; one sister, Irene Dufort of Gardner; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Timothy and Laura Conboy of Lexington, Tyler Richard, Ryan Richard, Casey Cormier and Curt Cormier all of Gardner; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 8th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 9:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon, MA.
Calling hours in the funeral home are Sunday, September 8th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
