Albina E. Stomski

Albina E. (Coulombe) Stomski, 92, of 59 Eastwood Circle, Gardner, died Sunday in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, following an illness.
Born in Gardner on June 2, 1911, she was the daughter of Wilfred and Albina E. (Dery) Coulombe.
She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
She enjoyed painting furniture, playing bingo, baking, cooking and trained in the art of Judo.
She took an interest in flying and in her late teens, took flying lessons and earned her Private Pilot's license. During World War II she joined the WASP as a Pilot and she received training flying the Army Air Corps B17 and B24 Bombers. Her duties, along with other WASP Pilots, was to ferry these military bombers to and from various locations worldwide, thereby freeing the male military pilots to fly combat missions. Although WASP was not initially part of the military, she subsequently commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps. At the end of World War II she returned to her home in Gardner.
She worked in various furniture factories in Gardner after 1945 as a furniture decorator. Her duties consisted of hand painting designs on furniture. She subsequently became "Director of Hand Decorating" for the L & Z Kamman Company who manufactured furniture for the Ethan Allen Company. Her duties later required her to travel to several states teaching hand decorating to the employees of other furniture companies associated with the Ethan Allen Company. She retired from the furniture business in 1974.
Her husband, Frank P. Stomski, died in 1986.
She leaves a son-in-law, Allan M. Magane of Winchendon; a daughter-in-law, Helen Stomski of Louisville, KY; 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a son, Paul J. Stomski of Louisville, KY who died in 2003, a daughter, Brenda M. Magane who died in 1998 and 2 brothers, Victor Coulombe and Peter Coulombe.

Funeral services will be held Thursday from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 12:00 noon in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 166 Cross St., Gardner.

Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner, at a later date.

Calling hours at the funeral home are Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
