Albert M. Akin, 86, of 61 Pleasant St., Baldwinville, died peacefully
Tuesday, June 28th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, surrounded by his family.
Born in Pikeville, TN on May 17, 1925, he was the son of Henry and Kitty (Swafford) Akin.
Albert retired from the U.S. Army after serving from 1945 to 1946 and 1949 to 1969. He was last employed as a Farm Manager for 18 years for the Commonwealth of MA Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, Baldwinville. Albert was a hard-working man whose greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his family. He enjoyed coin and stamp collecting, all outdoor activities, especially fishing. He also enjoyed reading the Bible. His greatest passion was farming.
He was a World War II, Korean and Vietnam War US Army veterand received the Army of Occupation Medal, Marksman Qualification Badge for Pistol, AREM-RVN, ARCSM, ACCM-Germany, GCM 5th AWD, NDSM w/Oak Leaf Cluster, and the WW II Victory Medal.
Albert's parents, Henry and Kitty Akin, did their share for the United States Government. They had seven sons and loaned five of them to their country where they served in the military.
He leaves his wife of 59 years, Jeannette E. (Provencher) Akin of Baldwinville; 2 sons, Jeffrey P. Akin and his wife Lisa of Wichita, KS, Michael J. Akin and his wife Carrie of Baldwinville, 5 daughters, Karen J. Harris and her husband George of Waterford, NY, Patricia A. Hartsfield and her husband Steve of Keithville, LA, Mary E. Kelly and her husband Dan of Fayetteville, NC, Susan T. Wojcian and her husband Steve of Richmond Hill, GA, Janet C. Cubas and her husband Alex of Navarre, FL; 2 brothers, Henry C. "H.C." Akin and his wife Helen of Pikeville, TN, Joe Akin and his wife Sharma of Catlettsburg, KY; 1 sister, Marie Myers of Pikeville, TN; 16 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, Lois Akin of Knoxville, Iowa, Elsie Akin of Dayton, TN; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by 2 sons, Mark A. Akin and John A. Akin, 4 brothers, Thomas " T.R." Akins, James "Jimmy" Akins, Alva Lewis Akin and Richard Akin, 3 sisters, Alla Mae Lynn, Irene Seals, and Lorene Roberts.
All funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Burial will be in the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.
Flowers are to be omitted.
