Adelard Joseph "A.J." Roberts, Jr., 84 of 151 A. Blanchard Street, Gardner, died peacefully Sunday, March 29th in the UMASS Memorial Medical Center, Lake Ave, Worcester, surrounded by his family.
Born in Peterborough, NH on September 30, 1924, he was the son of the late Adelard J. and Arzelie Albina (Duval) Roberts.
Prior to retiring, A.J. was owner and operator of A.J. Roberts Industrial Rubbish Removal, Gardner, MA for 25 years. He was previously a Union Construction Worker for various companies throughout the area for 17 years, and his first job was at Heywood Wakefield of Gardner as a machine operator for several years.
A.J. was a United States WWII Navy Veteran, and received the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the European Theatre Medal and the American Defense Medal. A.J. received an Honorary Diploma from Murdock High School in 2000, through Operation Recognition.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner. A.J. was also a member and past president of the Napoleon Club, the American Legion, Eugene M. Connor, Post 193 of Winchendon, MA and was one of the original founders of Club 25 of Gardner.
A.J. enjoyed golfing and dancing. He was an amazing champion swimmer and diver. He loved sports, and was an avid Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and New England Patriots fan. A.J. played football for many years with the Gardner Gymnasts. He was also a player and manager of the Napoleon Club Fast Pitch Softball League, which won the State Championship for several years.
He leaves three sons, Bruce E. Roberts and his girlfriend Rose Benoit of Fitchburg, Gary T. Roberts and his girlfriend Kathy Brow of E. Templeton and Tommy M. Roberts and his girlfriend Suzanne Leamy of Gardner; four daughters, Kathy A. Robinson and her husband Don of Gardner, Jackie A. Julin and her husband Tom of Thornton, CO, Tammi J. DiSalvo and her husband Len of Gardner and Donna L. Samson and her husband John of Gardner; one brother, John Roberts and his wife Rosalie of Winchendon; eight grandchildren, Brandin Roberts, Lynsey Miller, Louis Charbonneau, Aubree Samson, Zachary Roy, Garrett Robinson, Michael DiSalvo and Mia DiSalvo; his former wife, Anne (Cormier) Roberts of Gardner; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 3rd from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Winchendon.
Calling hours in the funeral home are Thursday, April 2nd from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
